Famous for his depiction of Bay City, a fictionalized version of Santa Monica, Raymond Chandler's colorful life is the topic of Freeman's talk and reading.

Judith Freeman is a novelist, critic and short story writer, author of four novels, a collection of short stories, and one work of non-fiction. Her novels include The Chinchilla Farm, Set for Life (winner of the Western Heritage Award), A Desert of Pure Feeling, and Red Water, which was named one of the best books of 2002 by the Los Angeles Times and winner of the Utah Book Award. Widely reviewed, the New Yorker called Red Water a “novel that makes astute points about the almost indistinguishable similarities between faith and love.” Her non-fiction book, The Long Embrace: Raymond Chandler and the Woman He Loved, was was named one of the ten best books of 2007 by Newsweek magazine, and made the “best of” lists of Salon.com, the Village Voice, the Los Angeles Times Book Review and Slate.com.

Stop by early for Beach House tours by docents from the Santa Monica Conservancy before every evening event, first come, first served.

Tickets: Free but seating is limited and reservations are required. If you would like to attend, please reserve online. Please plan to arrive by 6:15pm to retain your reservation. Parking and Driving directions: From the Pacific Coast Highway north of California Incline, turn at the Beach House Way traffic light into convenient parking ($4/hr, $8/day, disabled placards and Santa Monica senior beach parking passes accepted).

Beach=Culture at the Beach House



Welcome to Beach=Culture, a year-round series of free arts and culture events at the the Annenberg Community Beach House. We look forward to seeing you!

Please note that there is bike parking available onsite - bring a lock. Car parking is available and rates vary from weekdays to weekends and season to season.

Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the event; reservations are released then and late seating is not guaranteed. If an event is at capacity, we will generally open a waitlist online and you can sign up. We will not contact you; just plan to arrive by 15 minutes prior to the event and we will assess unclaimed reservations.
